Timeline for RHE 309 Course Proposals

The RHE 309 coure proposal process is fairly extensive. Proposals go though several rounds of vetting -- E 398T instructors, the RHE 309 committee and the DRW Director -- and are considered approved when they're received by the Liberal Arts Dean's Office. It is a good idea to start thinking about topics for a course as early as possible, as the process begins during the fall semester prior to teaching a RHE 309 course.

Late October to early November:
E 398T students begin developing topic proposals with the E 398T instructors.

Late November (before Thanksgiving):
Proposals due to 398T instructors, who turn them over to the RHE 309 curriculum committee. The committee meets to review all proposals, and agrees on which ones to approve and which to return for revisions. The committee chair then contacts each AI to discuss what work needs to be done on their proposal for resubmission and when the revision is due.

Early December:
Revised proposals are due to RHE 309 committee chair. The committee meets and evaluates the revisions.

December 15:
Deadline for submitting Substantial Writing Component (SWC) proposals online for fall courses. By this time, even if an AI's proposal hasn't reached final approval, it's fairly close, and they know the basic structure of the course -- enough to obtain SWC approval.

Mid through Late January:
All 309K revised proposals final-approved by the 309 committee and emailed to the DRW office.

Early February:
Each proposal is formatted, receives the Director's signature, and is submitted to the Dean's Office before the final round of fall course scheduling begins in mid-February. These proposals also are posted online prior to fall advising and registration. Every future RHE 309K instructor should have received SWC approval for their course by this time as well.

When students have received approval from the 309 committee, the format in which the proposals must be submitted is the following:

  • Instructor Name and Topic Title
  • 1-3 paragraph description of the course aimed at undergraduates who will read the description online
  • Texts that will be assigned
  • Assignments WITH grading percentages
