PCL Librarians!Context of Assignment
(The attached logs are cribbed from the library research log)I ask the students to provide a log with pre-writing exercise with each research summary.
Pedagogical Goals of the Assignment
Have the students think critically about HOW they access sources
Encourage the students to think about writing as a process that INCLUDES research - not one that starts AFTER research
Provide place to isolate thesis, evidence apart from research summary so that students think about document as an exercise in composition - putting these ideas together in a well-organized, coherent summary.
Track student research - a good forum to respond to student research. Are they using good search terms? Are they looking in the right place?
Assignment Description
Each of the logs ask the student to provide information on WHERE they found the source and asks them to consider some important factors for thinking about the text and context (who is writing, for whom, in what format, etc). The students are asked to isolate the thesis and support for this thesis as well as certain aspects of production and use that will help them think about the research summary as part of the unit's paper assignment.
