This assignment encourages students to get accustomed to linking material with which they are familiar to material with which they are unfamiliar in a timed environment.
Assignment Description

This assignment has students get into groups and make connections between a packet of material not on the syllabus with material on the syllabus.
The packet contains:
* Three indie rock songs (printed lyrics) with references to Robert Frost's "Mending Wall" and John Berryman (among others). I've got mp3s but can't upload them here. Contact me.
* A Berryman poem "Homage To Mistress Bradstreet."
* A review of the book Homage To Mistress Bradstreet from New England Quarterly.
* Part of a Wikipedia entry on Berryman.
Because of the variety of sources (even flagged Wikipedia stuff), it's a good way to talk about differences in source material. Full instructions are also included.
