CWRL Assignment DatabasePedagogical Goals of the Assignment
Description: This is a web research and short writing assignment (3-4 pages) designed for an E314J Lit and Film class or literary contests and contexts. While reading Pride and Prejudice, we examine fan web sites devoted to Jane Austen and her work. I then ask the students to peruse these sites and works of fan fiction that utilize characters from Pride and Prejudice, and to consider how those sites influence their perceptions and interpretations of Austen and Pride and Prejudice. Students research examples of fan sites and fan fiction, formulate a thesis, and then prove that thesis by using evidence from Pride and Prejudice and the selected web site.

RATIONALE:
This assignment is a good one for the following reasons:
• It fosters collaboration.
• It provides students with an opportunity to learn about usability by both analyzing usability problems and by providing solutions in their re-design.
• It provides students with an opportunity to develop a skill that they could use in their profession (95% of all large scale web design is now web re-design).
• It asks students to consider the relationship between graphics and content on a web page.
• It challenges student’s critical thinking skills.
• It provides a clear reason for learning HTML code instead of relying on Dreamweaver.

Website Annotation Assignment

In this assignment you will select at least 50 lines of poetry and place them on a web page. The lines can either be taken from a longer poem or compiled from one or more shorter poems (taken in their entirety). You will then annotate the lines with at least 10 notes containing a total of at least 500 of your own words (quotations or direct paraphrases should appear in your notes but should not be counted in the total) and at least 5 images. Your notes should offer a mixture of information and interpretation culled from secondary sources as well as your own knowledge and insights. Probably the best way to insert notes is to attach hyperlinks to certain keywords in the poetry. These links will go to notes on the same page, notes on a different page, or notes on separate pages. Don’t panic! I will provide examples and technical instructions in the weeks to come.

The text and images in your notes should follow MLA conventions for parenthetical citations, and your website should include a "Works Cited" page that displays bibliographical info on the source(s) of your poetry as well as any other critical sources you cited and/or consulted in the writing of your notes. Quotations from critical sources, while strongly encouraged, do not count towards the 500 word minimum.
