The MySpace Essay

Pedagogical Goals of the Assignment
Evaluate Heath and Potter’s argument in Nation of Rebels from the perspective of a prominent counterculture figure that will be assigned to you. This will require both a strong, comprehensive understanding of Heath and Potter’s argument and enough knowledge about your counterculture persona to construct a credible evaluation. You will construct this evaluation in two stages. The first stage (first submission) will be a MySpace page for your counterculture persona, on which you will construct arguments evaluating Nation of Rebels. For the second stage (second submission) you will turn your MySpace-based argument into an essay.

Description: This is a web research and short writing assignment (3-4 pages) designed for an E314J Lit and Film class or literary contests and contexts. While reading Pride and Prejudice, we examine fan web sites devoted to Jane Austen and her work. I then ask the students to peruse these sites and works of fan fiction that utilize characters from Pride and Prejudice, and to consider how those sites influence their perceptions and interpretations of Austen and Pride and Prejudice. Students research examples of fan sites and fan fiction, formulate a thesis, and then prove that thesis by using evidence from Pride and Prejudice and the selected web site.

Since the New Oxford American Dictionary declared it the word of the year for 2005, you may already know that a podcast is "a digital recording of a radio broadcast or similar program, made available on the internet for downloading to a personal audio player." It's quite easy to create and distribute a podcast with lab equipment. This guide will describe how to create a sound file with the Mac program GarageBand, and provide resources for hosting and syndication. It ends with suggestions for using podcasts in class.
